The 2014 growing season in the south west of Western Australia was favourable for the production of great wine. After a winter of sufficient rain, the spring to autumn period was continuously warm to hot, dry and characterised by less than average summer precipitation or humidity. An added bonus to the benign harvest conditions was the explosion of native blossom which sated the otherwise grape-loving, resident bird populations. The resulting red wines show an abundant and rich array of varietal expressions which are layered and pure.

The 2014 MadFish Merlot is a balanced, medium-weight wine which will be very food friendly. The colour is an attractive deep ruby which lightens off towards the rim. On the nose sweet berry fruits mingle with subtle tones of chocolate and hints of Tuscan herbs. Ripe raspberry and plum characters enliven the palate, while the tannins are well integrated to deliver length of flavour but a very supple mouthfeel. While a little reticent immediately after opening, the flavours develop and intensify as the wine breathes. A great wine to complement Mediterranean cuisine and winter comfort food.
