Marsannay is the most northern appellation of the Cote de Nuits sub-region of Burgundy.  Encompassing the villages of Marsanny-la-Cote, Chenove and Couchey, Marsannay is often referred to as the “golden gate” to the Côte d’Or.  The Pinot Noir from Marsannay combines approachability and fruit-forwardness with a firm structural backbone and subtle earth and mineral characters to provide both pleasing enjoyment and enticing complexity.  The wines represent some of the best value available today in the most revered area of Burgundy

    Vineyards

The most northern appellation of the Cote de Nuits, this wine is a blend of three plots on the north of Marsannay (the coolest part of the appellation): Les Vaudenelles, Les Echezeaux ( East facing, in between of the Combe Grandvau, and the Combe du Pré, well ventilated, late harvest) and Les Finottes (right underneath Echezeaux).

    Vinification

100% de-stemmed bunches, five days of cold maceration, two 'pigeage' a day at the start of the alcoholic fermentation, then pump-overs during the maceration for a gentle extraction.
    Total vatting time: 15 days
    Pressing: Pneumatic press

    Ageing

16 months of ageing in French oak barrels. One racking after malolatic fermentation. Bottled without any fining or filtration. All of the ageing operations are carried out according to the lunar calendar.

    Tasting Notes

Marsannay is situated between Dijon and Gevrey Chambertin, and its wines are rapidly rising in popularity, as they offer lightly mineral and perfumed reds. The 2014 Marchand & Burch Marsannay has an attractive limpid crimson colour with delicate red fruit characters, and aromas of rose petals and herbs;  the palate is supple, with gentle flavours of darker berries and fruit pastilles!, with a lightly toasty and light tannin finish which will soften nicely with time. This is well balanced, savoury and approachable.
